Meet Steve Nevers: Regular Construction Volunteer

“I always knew I wanted to be a regular volunteer,” Steve says with a grin. As a regular construction volunteer, Steve’s friendly face can be seen each week at our Sheridan Square construction site.

Steve explains that after retiring over a year ago, he started looking for something to do with his time. “I knew I wanted to do some sort of volunteer activity, to give back, and I had an interest in construction.” A year into getting involved as a regular Habitat volunteer, Steve knows he’s found a special place to spend his time, “It’s a lot of fun.”

“The comradery is what I find the most fun. I’ve enjoyed working with all the Habitat people and the other regular volunteers – they really know their stuff. Physically, building is a great activity. I’ve even lost weight compared to my days sitting all day long at a desk. You gain physical strength, the people are great, you learn a lot of skills, it’s fun, and it’s something to do with your day rather than sitting on the couch watching tv.”

The mission of Habitat “building homes and hope” is also a part of what Steve finds rewarding about regularly volunteering on a build site. “It’s very gratifying when you see the dedications and the new homeowners talk about what they’ve been through, what a step-up this is for them, and how excited they are to live in their own home. It’s great to be a part of that.”
