College Students Give Back During Spring Break
April 4, 2019
Students from across the country have taken a week off from studying to swing hammers with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver. These Collegiate Challenge participants are working hard and helping the community during their week off for spring break. This year we hosted students from Oregon State University, Cleveland State University, Simmons College, Suffolk University, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, and Northwestern University – Evanston.
Collegiate Challenge (also known as alternative spring break) teaches students the value of volunteering and how they can directly impact communities through affordable homeownership. Abby, a student at Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) shares her favorite part of the experience, “Interacting with so many kind and selfless people. It was refreshing and renewed my hope for the world we live in!”
Astha, a junior at IMSA shares, “I never thought I could do something like construction, but after the first day I feel so confident and excited to use my new skills for such a great cause.”
Sadie, from Northwestern University – Evanston has participated in Collegiate Challenge for three consecutive years. “I love working with Habitat.” Sadie continues, “Every time I come to a worksite to volunteer I am always overwhelmed by the positive energy everyone has and I enjoy working alongside partner families.”
Collegiate Challenge participants pictured below share what they enjoyed most about their week of service with Habitat.
“Knowing that I was making a difference in some people's lives when I was working on the construction site”
“Being in a welcoming environment where everyone is focused on the same goal as me, and working towards helping those in need!!”
“The future homeowners were working with us and it was just so nice to see them out at the construction site helping build their own home.”
“I enjoyed the service part and also getting to meet all the people who make Habitat of Metro Denver so great!”
“Learning about what Habitat has to offer and bonding with my group led to a truly life changing experience. I hope someday I can work for Habitat and design homes for families who need them!”
Thank you again to all the amazing students who chose to spend their spring break volunteering with Habitat Metro Denver.
