Building with Habitat

We build simple, decent, and affordable.

That’s been the mission since back in 1976: building simple, decent, and affordable housing for low-income families.

Simple, because we want to engage volunteers in as many aspects of construction as we can, and we want to keep costs down. Decent, because Habitat believes that every family deserves a warm, clean, safe place to call home “home.” Affordable, because these houses are not a give-away and low-income families need to be able to afford to purchase and live comfortably in them.

But we’re also building more than that:

We build beautiful.

Our in-house designers adapt our plans to the neighborhoods where we build and constantly work to improve our designs, details, and construction products. We build one and two story homes; we build on basements and we build on crawlspaces. We build single-family homes, duplexes, and entire townhome complexes. We even do exterior renovations on owner-occupied homes in target neighborhoods.

We build green.

We are constantly evaluating our building processes to improve the energy efficiency of our finished houses. Using affordable options we reduce waste, recycle everything possible, use low-VOC products, and utilize Advanced Framing Techniques. We independently audit and rate all of our houses and certify each as Energy Star 3.0 homes. We partner with organizations and certifications like EPA’s WaterSense and Indoor airPLUS as well as the USGBC’s LEED program. Our homes have a lower impact on the environment both during construction and during occupancy.  Learn more about our Decade of Dedication to Green Building.

We build safe.

All of our sites uphold an internal safety policy in compliance with or exceeding OSHA regulations. Knowing that many visitors to our sites are unfamiliar with the potential hazards of the construction industry, we take extra care to protect everyone through daily inspections, weekly reviews and training classes, and a constant focus on safety performance and improvement.
