Lisa & Francisco's Story
With bullets still lodged in their front porch from the most recent shooting, Lisa and Francisco worry every time their children step outside their door. “Our neighbors are always fighting, drinking and smoking weed,” shares Lisa. “Our kids’ bikes were stolen the first day we lived here. They deserve to live in a place where they can be safe, have the freedom to play outside and just be kids.”
Lisa and Francisco would like nothing more than to be able to raise their children in a safe environment, but with Denver’s high housing costs, their options have been limited. Lisa found their current apartment five years ago and was excited to secure an affordable, 3-bedroom apartment for their family of eight. What’s kept them there is a controlled rent for qualifying low-income families, allowing their rent to remain affordable over the years.
Lisa and Francisco run a tight ship within their home with chore charts and strict schedules. The family also places a lot of importance on homework and education. Because of this sense of responsibility and structure within their household, their children are excelling at school. Lisa and Francisco know that a world of new opportunities is going to open up for their children once they move into their new Habitat home early next year. “Sheridan Square is in such a nicer neighborhood than where we currently live,” shares Lisa. “This is going to be huge for us… huge for our life and our dreams.”
Moving from a 3-bedroom apartment to a 5-bedroom home is going to make a big difference for Lisa and Francisco’s family of eight. “Katrina’s lived in apartments her entire life,” Lisa shares about their oldest daughter. “She’ll have her own bedroom for the first time in her life.”
“Our Habitat home will bring a lot of peace to our household. Having more personal space and privacy will make a big difference.”
“Francisco and I are working hard towards better things for our family – we want to lead by example and teach our kids about credit scores and the importance of building their credit,” shares Lisa. As parents, they want to provide their children with a safe and stable home so that their children can grow into their full potential. “Whatever our kids dreams are, I want them to go for it 100%. We want our kids to be independent and self-sufficient.”
“This literally is our dream come true!”
