Preserve & Expand SHOP Funding for Affordable Homeownership
The national budget cycle has kicked off, and Habitat for Humanity needs your help to make our voices heard on the importance of funding the Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) and Rural Capacity Building Program (RCB) this budget cycle!
The grassroots sign-on letter allows local organizations and community members to show their support of SHOP and RCB. The letter asks House and Senate appropriators to support SHOP at $20 million and RCB at $5 million in the fiscal year 2022 budget. We need you to add your voice now to help preserve and expand these important programs!
SHOP is a uniquely effective program that supports the work of nonprofit organizations that employ the self-help homeownership model, a method that has assisted tens of thousands of low-income families to build a safe and affordable place to call home. In 2020, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver received $161,871 in SHOP funding, which allowed us to build 13 homes and leverage approximately $5.1 million in private funding.
The RCB program supports a wide range of assistance to local rural housing nonprofits and others working to address affordable housing needs and build stronger communities.
Please sign the letter by Thursday, March 4, 2021. The more signatures we have, the more federal legislators will see that these programs are more important than ever and need to be expanded.
Thank you for your support. Your voice makes a difference!
