Meet Some of Habitat's Current Partner Families

Habitat for Humanity builds and sells quality housing to low-income families who need a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.  Our program is not just about building houses, it's about giving families in need a stable foundation from which they can grow and thrive.

Habitat believes that a home can transform lives, restore hope, and cast a lasting light into communities for generations to come.  Enjoy reading these stories about local partner families who are just beginning their journey towards homeownership with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver.

Stormi
"My kids will know where home is and they'll always be able to come home."

stormi on site

Stormi is a life-long Denver resident who has always been a renter.  She never imagined becoming a homeowner until a friend introduced her to Habitat and suggested she apply.  Now Stormi is excited to be moving into a home she can call her own within the year.  Stormi works two jobs to try and make ends meet for herself and her children – Cora and Lionel.  They currently live in a cramped, 2-bedroom apartment in an unsafe neighborhood.  The apartment is too small for Stormi’s family and they feel that added space will be the biggest difference for her them in their new Habitat home.  “I’ll have my own bedroom and something that belongs to me.  I’ll be able to paint the walls”, she said.  Stormi would like to thank everyone at Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver for this opportunity and thank all the volunteers who help make homeownership possible for her.  Stormi said that experience has inspired her to continue volunteering once she has moved into her new home.

Abdel and Khadija
“It’s like winning the lottery!  Habitat came to us like a dream.  We never expected that we could afford to buy a home.”

abdelAbdel and Khadija are originally from Morocco, and moved to Denver over 10 years ago for more opportunities and to raise their young family.  This family of six includes daughters Hajar, Aicha, and Ikram, as well as Khadija’s mother, Zahra.  Abdel and Khadija’s family currently lives in a cramped, 2-bedroom and 1-bathroom apartment in south Denver.  The family has long outgrown this small apartment but can’t afford to move into a larger unit.  Abdel knows that everything is going to change once they move into their Habitat for Humanity home.  They are going to have more living space for the girls to play and grow up in.  They’re also never going to have to worry about moving or changing schools again, and they’ll be able to add personal touches to the house to make it really feel like home.  Hajar and Aicha are already excited to move into their new home and the first thing both girls want to do is paint their bedrooms red.  Abdel and Khadija’s home is generously sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the Holy Hammers coalition.

Armando and Lorrie
"We count our blessings and not our losses.  Habitat is a blessing - we don't take it for granted."

armando and lorrie
Colorado native, Armando and his wife Lorrie, who moved to Colorado from Staten Island, NY twenty years ago, currently reside in Lakewood, CO with their son, Matthew. Armando and Lorrie first became involved with Habitat at the end of their winding path to sustainable housing. In the past, Armando and Lorrie have applied for a mortgage, Section 8, a transitional housing program, and have had to live with family and friends. The Gonzales family is thrilled to soon have a permanent place to call home. They truly believe that a home will serve as a steady foundation for their future.  Armando, Lorrie and Matthew are genuine in their appreciation for partnering with Habitat. “Thank you for your time, generosity and will to help others.”  Matthew believes that his family’s involvement with Habitat is also teaching him responsibility and he feels motivated to become a homeowner himself in the future.

Rebecca
"I was praying for a home, and the next week a Habitat flyer was included with my mail.  The door had opened."

RebeccaRebecca currently lives in an apartment in West Denver with her 12-year old daughter, Danielle. Their apartment has a series of issues including heating problems, mice, a stove with burners that don't work, and a serious plumbing problem. Partnering with Habitat has allowed Rebecca to learn new skills and dream about her family’s future.  Through her sweat equity hours, Rebecca has declared she is a “Woman of all Trades”. She says “working on building homes has been a learning experience in an area that I’d never thought I’d be good at.”  Her daughter, Danielle, is looking forward to decorating her room, as well as getting a dog now that their home will be bigger. Her 21-year old son, Ray, will also return home from college this summer to help build Habitat homes with his mom.  “This home is something that we will take good care of. My kids will take these values and teach it to the next generation. I’m so excited to bring them home to something that’s ours. We won’t be limited”, says Rebecca.
